Dexter on Showtime
I started watching the Showtime series Dexter when it originally premiered. I found it to be truly addictive! I've watched every episode since the premiere and can't wait for the new season in September 2011. If you haven't heard of it then let me help you understand it.
This series is a drama but has quite a bit of dark humor. Dexter is a Blood Analyzist employeed at the Miami PD. He was adopted by a cop (Harry, deceased). He has a half sister named Deborah (Deb) who is a Cop as well at Miami PD. Dexter seems normal but in fact he isn't. In his own time when not photographing crime scenes he is "creating" them. Dexter is somewhat of a serial killer although in the eyes of many he's actually avenging those who never got justice. In jist, he kills those who kill others (and get away with it). He is socially akward but tries very hard to fit in and appear normal.
The only person who knew about Dexters activities was his (adopted) father. When Harry found out about Dexters dark side he decided to use this as a tool and "help" Dexter to be safe. Harry taught him what is referred to as "The Code of Harry". Rule #1 Don't get caught! He lerned many ways to safely do what "needed" to do and remain a free man. He is very good at what he does both professionally and with his darkness.
The show takes you through Dexters life and along the way the lives of his family, co-workers, victims of crime and the criminals he brings to justice. The show has a new story every season and they are all very good. I must admit that the last season (2010) left a little to be desired but still good. The characters are constantly growing and changing in both good and bad ways. This is not by any means a "happy" show. It sheds light on what America seems to want to avoid. We (USA) have had the most serial killers on known record so there must be something to this.
Dexter will begin it's 5th season this September. For those of you who are interested I DO NOT suggest jumping in at season 5 but go back to the beginning. Every season ties together and carries over in some way. If you don't know where Dexter and the other characters come from then you will never truly enjoy the series. I recommend this for those who want to watch something unlike anything else, for those who have interest in the study of serial killers, for those interested in crime drama and those who just want to let a little darkness in for 43 minutes every week.
